Ancestry Self Portrait:

Who Am I and Where Do I Come From?

A seven-week committed series exploring self portrait and ancestral roots through movement-based expressive arts and drama therapy techniques.

Imagine if you could step back in time and listen to your ancestors. Have you ever wondered what your great great grandmother endured and imagined her story? What if her story was your story? If you had to enact her, what would she say? How do you hold her stories and dreams in your body?

Through movement we will connect to our physical bodies. Through specific body parts we will explore metaphor and personal mythology as a way to connect with our imagination and transport through time, meeting and greeting those who came before us. We will welcome those we knew and those we didn’t know. We will listen to the voices wanting to be heard, the stories wanting to be shared, fictional or true. We will create images, dances and poetry as if the ancestors were speaking.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN FROM THIS WORKSHOP SERIES

Through movement based expressive arts, drama therapy and other somatic practices learn tools and resources to help regulate the nervous system, helped identify personal needs and wants and give permission for your voice, dance and images to be felt, heard and witnessed. Art, movement, writing and improvisation are ways to explore, investigate and travel, alone and in community.

When we slow down to sense surroundings and feel our bodies we can regulate our nervous system to help regulate emotional states of being. We know we need time, more than a few minutes, to cultivate deep listening. We know that we can do this alone AND how we must engage with others to know we are part of something bigger.

Through somatic movement and expressive arts we engage with the physical, mental, emotional and imaginal parts of self. Through The Talking Body, we dive deeply into the body to feel, remember, listen and imagine personal beliefs and stories to create new images to dance to live by.

About Maggie

Hi, my name is Maggie, I am a certified Tamalpa Practitioner and a Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist.  I started The Talking Body 7 years ago to fulfill my dream of empowering women to share their stories through embodied expressive arts. Ever since I was 3, dance, and art has been my form of communication.

I offer simple tools and resources to build bridges and pathways forward, and to heal old thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve us.

With over forty years of education and experience working with clients, I offer a blend of healing arts such as dance, somatic movement, fine arts, expressive arts, social work, drama/theater improvisation, and a variety of touch-based healing practices.

Have you ever wondered, If you body could speak, what would it say? How would it dance? What sounds would it make?
